The Camino de Santiago is an extraordinary journey—a chance to challenge yourself, connect with fellow pilgrims, and immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes of Spain. One of the most common questions for first-time walkers is: When is the best time to walk the Camino?
The truth is, there’s no single “perfect” time. Each season has its own appeal, but if you asked me, May and June are by far the best months to experience the Camino. After spending over 70 days walking various sections of this historic trail, I’ve found late spring and early summer to offer the ideal combination of weather, scenery, and atmosphere. This is exactly why we’ve planned our 2025 guided Camino trips during this time.
Why May and June Are the Best Months for the Camino de Santiago
Comfortable Temperatures for Walking
Walking the Camino in May and June means enjoying some of the best weather Spain has to offer. Daily temperatures range between 50°F and 75°F (10°C to 24°C), making it comfortable for long days on the trail.
The mornings are cool, making early starts pleasant with refreshing morning air. Unlike the hotter months of July and August, you won’t have to worry about extreme temperatures slowing you down. May and June strike the perfect balance, allowing you to focus on the beauty of the journey.
A Peaceful Yet Social Atmosphere
May and June are ideal for avoiding the heavy crowds of peak summer. You’ll find a welcoming mix of fellow pilgrims on the trail—enough to enjoy the camaraderie of shared experiences, but not so many that the trail or accommodations feel overcrowded. With fewer people on the trail, it’s also easier to find quiet moments for reflection while still enjoying the communal spirit of the Camino.
This balance creates an ideal atmosphere: vibrant enough to meet new people and share stories, yet peaceful enough to find moments of solitude and reflection.
Nature at Its Most Beautiful
In May and June, the Camino’s landscapes are at their most beautiful. The spring rains have given way to lush greenery, wildflowers line the trails, and the golden wheat fields of Spain’s Meseta begin to shimmer under the sun.
Whether you’re walking through the rolling hills of Navarra, the vineyards of La Rioja, or the lush forests of Galicia, the Camino is a feast for the senses at this time of year.
